One of my favorite women in literature is Arya Stark from Game Of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. I love her character because of the strength and perseverance she embodies throughout the series.
“You are Arya of Winterfell, daughter of the North. You told me you could be strong. You have the wolf blood in you” --- pg. 677.
Arya's life has not been easy. As one of the few surviving members of the Stark family, she was forced to grow up quickly in order to stay alive. At the age of nine she learned how to wield a sword. Over the course of the next few years she honed her skills and trained to be an assassin, avenging the deaths of her siblings.
While her story is gruesome and filled with blood and violence, Arya represents an admirably strong and powerful female character. She has persevered in the face of hardship, never giving up, even when dealing with the most difficult of challenges.
Arya is also admirable as a powerful female because in Martin's fictional realm men are viewed as superior to women yet she does not follow the gender norms. Arya stays true to herself and does not let other people opinions, especially those of other men, get in her way.
Although she is underestimated because of her size and age, Arya Stark is extremely powerful and deadly. Her character shows a fierce, defiant, and persevering nature that contradicts society's expectations for women. As a result she has become a memorable fan favorite literary figure in the fantasy genre.
