I love the combination of literature and music. Pairing the two together helps me create a more meaningful story in my mind. After reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio, I wanted to create a playlist inspired by the book's themes.
“I think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives” --- pg. 231.
Auggie Pullman was born with a severe facial difference that has kept him homeschooled up until this point. Now a rising 5th grader, Auggie is ready to enroll in public middle school and be 'normal' for once. But he soon realizes fitting in at his new school will be harder than he thought when the rest of his classmates can't seem to get past his appearance. This story highlights themes of empathy, acceptance, family and friendship, and perseverance.

"Unstoppable" by Sia
Sia's motivational pop song carries an empowering and confident message about standing up for yourself. The singers lyrics emphasize the importance of being seen for who you are, imperfections and all.
Auggie embodies this song during his transfer to public middle school. Up until this point, he has worn an astronaut helmet to cover his face. Now, he is ready to remove the helmet he has been hiding behind and confront his challenges.
"Comeback Kid (That's My Dog)" by Brett Dennen
This positive and upbeat tune tells the story of someone who has been through a hard time but is now on the road to recovery.
After being a victim of bullying, Auggie starts to believe he will never fit in with the other kids at his school. To be recognized for his achievements, not just his face, he outsmarts his peers in science class, proving that outward appearance isn't everything.
Clearly by Grace Vanderwaal
"Clearly" connects strongly with R.J. Palacio's Wonder as both Grace Vanderwaal and Auggie Pullman struggle to overcome the obstacles standing in their way. They share a common thread of perseverance by telling themselves everything will eventually be alright, they just have to keep moving forward.
King And Lionheart by Of Monsters And Men
Powerful and filled of determination, this song is about not backing down in a fight.
As Auggie is put under a metaphorical microscope for everyone to look at, he has to be brave and stand strong in order to show his classmates he will not run away from the situation because he has nothing to be afraid of.
Two High by Moon Taxi
By promoting the peace sign, "Two High" incorporates the books concepts of acceptance, empathy, and community. Although Auggie has difficulty making friends at first, he eventually finds a group of people who are willing to accept and defend him.
